It’s almost Christmas time again and, to borrow the words of John Paul Young’s song, “Love is in the air”.  (“Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh” was how the chorus eloquently ended, if I remember rightly.)

Love is “in the air” every Christmas. It features in the songs we hear as we shop for presents and in the commercials we see on TV (“Show someone they’re loved this Christmas”, as one department-store slogan put it). Love is present in the cards we send and in the words we write on the tags we attach to the presents we give (“With love from…”).

Tired Just Thinking About Advent? Slow Down and Savor Christ.

The Christmas season brings a heightened feeling that something wonderful is coming. Can you sense it?

Like a faint sound in the distance drawing nearer. Like the waiting at the airport to be reunited with loved ones as they emerge from the terminal. Like the moment right before the sun peeks out from below the horizon. Like a promise about to come true. Something wonderful is coming. Frederick Buechner writes:

For a second you catch a whiff in the air of some fragrance that reminds you of a place you’ve never been and a time you have no words for. You are aware of the beating of your heart. The extraordinary thing that is about to happen is matched only by the extraordinary moment just before it happens. Advent is the name of that moment.

Advent. It means something wonderful is coming.

111 Great Songs for Advent

The perennial “how early is too early to listen?” debates exist, in part, because there is a glut of really great Christmas music in the world. Too much, some argue, to confine it to only one month of the year. But it’s December now, and Advent begins tomorrow (Sunday, December 2), so this year’s debates are over. It’s officially time to start listening to Christmas music.

To that end, I have curated a new playlist of 111 Advent songs. Not “holiday” songs, mind you. Advent songs. You won’t find “Deck the Halls” or “Let It Snow” on this list (lovely as they are). But you will find songs that beautifully capture the theological gravitas of this season in the Christian calendar—a season that is about both joy and longing, celebration and expectation, gratitude and petition.
