Newton: the Lord only afflicts for our good

according to Script

We could do much worse than start the week off with some wisdom from John Newton.

…be not discouraged; the Lord only afflicts for our good. It is necessary that our sharpest trials should sometimes spring from our dearest comforts, else we should be in danger of forgetting ourselves, and setting up our rest here. In such a world, and with such hearts as we have, we shall often need something to prevent our cleaving to the dust, to quicken us to prayer, and to make us feel that our dependence for one hour’s peace is upon the Lord alone.

–John Newton, “To the Rev. William Rose,” Letter II. 21 December 1776. Letters of John Newton.

Chapter 8: Living When Dying Is Gain

The Fragments Ramble On

This is part 8 of my series reading, highlighting, and commenting on David Platt’s book Radical. I’m going chapter by chapter, picking out the highlights (direct quotes from the book in italics) and offering some comments of my own.

Do we believe the reward found in Jesus is worth the risk of following him?

To everyone wanting a safe, untroubled, comfortable life free from danger, stay away from Jesus. The danger in our lives will always increase in proportion to the depth of our relationship with Christ.

Maybe this is why we sit back and settle for a casual relationship with Christ and routine religion in the church. It is safe there, and the world likes us there. The world likes us when we are pursuing everything they are pursuing, even if we do put a Christian label on it. As long as Christianity looks like the American dream…

Chapter 9: The Radical Experiment

The Fragments Ramble On

This is part 9 of my series reading, highlighting, and commenting on David Platt’s book Radical. I’m going chapter by chapter, picking out the highlights (direct quotes from the book in italics) and offering some comments of my own.

This is the last chapter of the book. It serves is a little bit of a summary chapter to put the whole book into a concrete context for action and change.

Throughout this book we have explored a variety of bold claims about our purpose in life that are contained in the gospel yet contradicted by the American dream. Claims such as these: Real success is found in radical sacrifice. Ultimate satisfaction is found not in making much of ourselves but in making much of God. The purpose of our lives transcends the country and culture in which we live. Meaning is found in community, not individualism; joy is found…

The Spirit Abides In Us

The Lavished Pauper

In John’s day, the antichrists about whom he was writing were trying to lead God’s people astray through false teaching. John said that the anointing of the Holy Spirit would teach those to whom He was writing and would continue to guide them into Truth. John said:

I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him. - 1 John 2:26-27 (NIV)

Be careful when it comes to those you listen to when it comes to teachers and preachers. If God’s Spirit is warning you that what they are teaching doesn’t sound quite right, then search the Scriptures and judge…

Emily-Rose Lewis Ministries

Name three things that you would love to do or accomplish in your life if you had absolutely no limitations. Don’t be shy or hold back because they seem too big, too small, too expensive, too selfish, too silly etc. And I am not talking spiritual accomplishments like having abundant peace and joy or broad things like making millions of dollars but specific things like taking a two week tour of Italy, getting a degree, starting a homeless shelter or owning a house on the ocean.

Desire is one of the deepest things in life. Part of our romance with Christ should include visioning; believing to experience more, accomplish more and co-create fun, useful and exciting things with Him here in the earth.

Yes, hunger and thirst for righteousness. Yes, desire God and to please Him above all else. Yes, be content with what you have. But…

Lord, You have so much to teach us – and we have so much to learn.

Learning From God's Word

Lord, You have so much to teach us – and we have so much to learn. How do we learn from You? – You open up Your Word to us. You speak to us words of life. You shine Your light upon us. You show us how much You love us. Every day You have something to say to us. Every day, You have something to share with us. Every day, You show us more of Your love for us. Help us, each and every day, to take time to learn from You.

Throughout life, Lord, we have to make choices. Some choices are relatively straightforward. Others are very much more difficult. Some choices don’t affect the rest of our life very much. There are, however, choices which affect the whole of our life. Help us, Lord, to make the one choice which is more important than any other – Choosing…
